2014 Home Trends from KBIS & IBS: LED lighting

At the KBIS 2014/IBS Vegas show, I noted a small, but growing trend: LEDs making a quiet foray into all things home. They’re highly efficient, don’t cast heat into the room, are dimmable, give some pretty pure light, and they last a long time. If you’re asking what LEDs are good for other than general lighting, here’s a sample of what is trickling down from the commercial and luxury home design.

From sinks like these from TOTO:

To fireplaces:

To everyday controls:

To wall, baseboard and bar lighting:

To interior cabinet lighting:

To even decorative lighting in a kitchen backsplash:

Expect to see more LED applications in the next few years.  (Clicking on the sinks, fireplace, hood fan, and backsplash above should take you to the websites.)

  1. From an energy perspective, I got to say about time though I know it has taken them time to advance where the looks & output match up with other bulbs – with that a quick caveat. Be careful around heat producing devices as anytime the heat raises above its set threshold by a few degrees the life of the fixture / bulb gets cut in half.

  2. Hi Kelly

I’m not sure if this is a new trend but it sure is cool. Custom glass counter-tops with LED back-lighting are fabulous. Here’s a company that had a small booth at the show with an impressive product line. http://www.studiolglassworks.com/

    • Thanks for chiming in! I totally agree with you, glass with LED backlighting is cool. Most of these items have been around for awhile; what is interesting to me is that they’re finally making their way into mainstream design.
