Found your old blog about the resistance in soft close drawers and cabinets doors. I too have severe problems with my hands, and am having trouble finding a new vanity without ANY resistance. Other issues are 18″ depth, and either 39″ or 42″ with the sink on the right, not centered. Any ideas appreciated. – B.
I emailed B. but thought it made a good topic and expanded it at length here. The post she is referring to is here: Two designers Discuss Soft-Close Drawers.
The challenge our reader is having is that most ready-made or stock cabinets come in stock sizes, such as this style from Pottery Barn:
Cheaper, yes, because it’s mass-produced. 54″ x 21″ cabinet depth or 55″ x 22″ overall depth. In this case there are no drawers, so we’ve solved the soft-close issue of requiring too much force for injured or arthritic hands, but unless B. is Martha Stewart with a cast of assistants, she’ll be fluffing those towels endlessly for anyone who might stop by.
Here are the challenges:
- These units can’t be custom sized so there’s no chance of an 18″ depth
- Even if the vanity had drawers, it would most likely come with the self-closing hardware
- Say you tried to combine two units — a vanity sink cabinet and a drawer set — there would still be problems. It would be almost impossible to find two that would fit into the 39″ – 42″ width and there would be a counter seam right in the middle.
This is a job for a semi-custom or custom cabinet line, not a website or mass-market manufacturer. What you’re looking for isn’t a high-end luxury model either — you’re still looking for a mass-production but with custom options. I might suggest visiting or calling local cabinet showrooms with that list of questions — someone would be able to tell you very quickly if it’s possible with their cabinet lines.
It might not be as expensive as you may think.
One final tip: not all sinks fit in an 18″ deep cabinet and still have room left for the faucet installation. Selecting a smaller sink would be crucial or one could mount the faucet off to one side.
